One cannot overstate the wickedness that is female genital mutilation, which is traditionally done in many Islamic countries. In fact 98% of Somali women are circumcised, a practice not all survive.

Fartun Hassan Ahmed, the daughter of nomadic pastoralists, bled to death after being cut earlier this month in the village of Jeerinle in the state of Galmudug, her mother said. “We looked for a car [to take her to hospital] but it could not reach us in time … We didn’t know what to do. Later we found a car but she was already dead when it arrived,” said Fartun’s mother, Nadifo Fartun. She said she stayed with her daughter as she bled from the early morning, when she was cut, until she died at about 4pm.

Why, because Muhammed thought it was a good idea: “Abu al- Malih ibn Usama’s father relates that the Prophet said: ‘Circumcision is a law for men and a preservation of honour for women’” (Ahmad Ibn Hanbal 5:75). And lest one think that it is as innocuous as male circumcision, think again. The goal is to remove the clitoris in order to remove the sex drive, so that women will not be promiscuous. Consider centuries of this practice in dusty tents, under trees, or rustic hovels at the hands of traditional cutters.

To their credit, Global Media Campaign is trying to make a difference. This video has a couple rough moments, but we owe it to our sisters around the world to watch and understand:
