I was discouraged to read that the Vatican News agency promoted the delight of the “Nuns on the Bus” regarding the recent American election

After midterm elections in the United States, one outstanding result is a surge in the number of women elected to Congress. As Sister Simone Campbell, leader of the “Nuns on the Bus” Network Lobby for Catholic Social Justice explained to Sr. Bernadette Reis, 118 women will serve in the 116th Congress, bringing the share of women legislators to at least 22 percent.

Even Wikipedia reminds us:

The group was at one time criticized by the Vatican under Benedict XVI’s leadership for having “serious doctrinal problems” and “radical feminist themes incompatible with the Catholic faith.” Unlike U.S. Bishops at that time, the Nuns on the Bus group was supportive of national health care legislation known as Obamacare. Simone Campbell was one of the American nuns targeted by then Pope Benedict XVI in 2012 through his controversial investigation of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. The Vatican investigators accused the American nuns of insufficient adherence to traditional doctrines.

This stance seems to have changed since 2012, and now we’re face down in identity politics with a patina of papal approval. Never mind that just being a woman has little to do with authentic femininity or nurturing life within the family. One of those new female faces was Lauren Underwood of Illinois’ 14th district:

Illinois provides greater access to abortion than many other Midwestern states, and the midterm election saw two pro-life congressman ousted by proponents of safe, legal abortions.

Emily’s List president, Stephanie Schriock, was also thrilled with the increased representation of women:

“Before the first ballot of this election was cast, I promised Nancy Pelosi women would deliver Democrats the majority. And at EMILY’s List, we were proud to help those women do just that. With results still coming in, EMILY’s List-endorsed women have flipped 23 seats and counting. This groundbreaking group of women have already made history. We can’t wait to see what they do in Congress.”

What will they do in Congress? Fight any effort to protect the unborn, for “reproductive rights” are the keys of Emily’s List’s endorsement.

It should be obvious that when anyone is praised for the group he or she is a part of (whether tribal or biological) it clouds the achievement of the person and his philosophy. In this particular case, the pink chairs now multiplying in the US House or Representatives is actually a great loss to family values, and an insult to the feminine hearts we are called to bear in the world.

The nuns and Vatican News are throwing sand in our eyes
