One of the perks of being a mother and writer is the privilege of sitting on the sidelines, scanning the horizon and making prudential judgments about what the world has to offer. With a culture in free-fall like our own, those judgments--more often than not--can be quite cranky and even morose. Such is our landscape.
This bundle of ferrago is a mixed bag: various potshots aimed at the popular culture, some reflections on the classics, and some huzzahs for great new works that will edify and inspire. Thankfully, the joy that keeps us sane is based on our firm trust that what the world has to offer is typically shallow compared to eternity with God, so the enduring yardstick by which to measure all things is how each piece links us to that Reality. On a sliding scale of "great gifts" to "misses the mark completely," you'll find quite a range, but I hope the reflections won't be a waste of your time. Enjoy!
